The difference between French, American, and European bra sizes

Marie Jo’s high-quality lingerie makes all women shine. The only condition: wearing the right bra size. Most bra labels contain three different sizes: EU, US, and FR. These abbreviations stand for European, American, and French bra sizes. What's the difference? How do you calculate your American size? Which size system should you use? Our Marie Jo lingerie stylists explain.

Your European and French sizes

In Belgium, most women use the European size system. Your bra size consists of a number (your band size) and a letter (your cup size).

What's the difference between your European and French bra size?

  • band size If your European band size is 90 centimeters, add 15 centimeters to find your French size (105).
  • cup size Your cup size stays the same in the French size system. If your European size is a 90C, your French bra size would be a 105C

Your American bra size

American clothing sizes are calculated in inches instead of centimeters. The same is true of American bra sizes. There’s also a different measurement system.

So how do you calculate your American size?

  • band size Measure the circumference of your rib cage just under your breasts and add 5 inches. Round to the nearest even number. The result is your band size. If your European band size is 75 centimeters, your American band size would be 34 inches.
  • cup size You can calculate your American cup size the same way you would find your European bra size: the difference between your bust size (measured at the fullest part of your breasts) and the circumference of your rib cage (measured just under your breasts). Keep in mind that the American size system uses double letters from an E cup. This means a European E would be an American DD, and a European F would be an American E.

Which size system should you use?

Belgium uses the European and the French bra sizing system, but it doesn’t really matter which system you use. All three sizes are always included on the label. Just make sure you’re consistent, especially when determining your sister sizes. If you have questions or if you want to buy your first bra, stop by a Marie Jo boutique near you.
